The University Grants Commission (UGC) is a statutory body that was established by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. Its creation was in accordance with the UGC Act 1956, and it is responsible for the coordination, determination, and maintenance of standards of higher education in India.

A “Deemed University,” also known as a “Deemed to be University,” is a special status of autonomy granted by the Department of Higher Education based on the advice of the UGC. This status is granted under Section 3 of the UGC Act. As of January 25, 2023, the UGC has listed 50 institutions as Deemed to be Universities, which are included under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956.

In India, there are a total of 1,057 universities that have been approved by the UGC. These include various types of universities such as State Universities, Deemed Universities, Central Universities, and Private Universities. Among these, there are 456 State Universities, 126 Deemed Universities, 54 Central Universities, and 421 Private Universities.

State Universities are universities that are established by the state governments and are funded and regulated by them. These universities play a vital role in providing higher education opportunities to students in different states across India. They offer a wide range of courses and programs in various disciplines.

Deemed Universities, on the other hand, are institutions that have been granted the status of autonomy by the Department of Higher Education. These universities have the authority to design and offer their own courses and programs. They are known for their specialized and niche areas of study, and they often have a strong focus on research and innovation. Central Universities are universities that are established by an act of Parliament and are funded and regulated by the central government.

These universities are spread across different states in India and offer a diverse range of courses and programs. They are known for their high academic standards and rigorous selection processes. Private Universities, as the name suggests, are universities that are privately owned and managed. They are established by private entities or organizations and operate independently of the government. These universities often have a unique educational approach and may specialize in specific fields or disciplines.
