The Department of Agriculture, Government of Maharashtra, in collaboration with the World Bank, has introduced the Nanaji Deshmukh Krishi Sanjivani Prakalp, also known as the Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture (PoCRA). This initiative represents a significant endeavor aimed at fostering climate-resilient agricultural practices within the state of Maharashtra, India. The primary objective of the Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture (PoCRA) is to bolster the climate resilience and economic viability of a substantial number of farmers in Maharashtra.

Specifically, the project targets the enhancement of climate resilience and profitability for 700,000 small-scale farmers with land holdings ranging from 1 to 2 hectares and 1,000,000 marginal farmers with less than 1 hectare of land. These efforts are concentrated in 5,000 villages spread across 15 districts in Maharashtra that are particularly impacted by drought conditions and salinity/sodicity issues.

The PoCRA project encompasses a comprehensive approach to address the challenges faced by farmers in drought-prone and salinity-affected regions. By implementing innovative agricultural practices, leveraging sustainable technologies, and providing necessary support and resources, the project aims to empower farmers to adapt to changing climatic conditions and enhance their agricultural productivity and income levels.

Through the strategic deployment of resources, capacity-building initiatives, and knowledge transfer programs, the Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture (PoCRA) seeks to create a sustainable and resilient agricultural ecosystem in Maharashtra. By equipping farmers with the tools and techniques to mitigate the impact of climate change on their agricultural activities, the project endeavors to secure the livelihoods of small and marginal farmers while fostering environmental sustainability and food security in the region.

The Nanaji Deshmukh Krishi Sanjivani Prakalp, or Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture (PoCRA), stands as a transformative initiative that holds the potential to revolutionize agricultural practices in Maharashtra. By prioritizing climate resilience, sustainability, and the economic well-being of farmers, the project not only addresses the immediate challenges posed by climate change but also paves the way for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector in the state.
