In the Swiss canton of St. Gallen, near Lake Zurich, there is a small village called Bollingen. In 1922, the psychiatrist Carl Jung decided to build a retreat there. He started with a simple two-story stone house known as the Tower. After a trip to India, where he saw how people added meditation rooms to their homes, he expanded his retreat to include a private office. Jung valued his privacy, saying, “In my retiring room I am by myself. I keep the key with me all the time; no one else is allowed in there except with my permission.”

In the book Daily Rituals, journalist Mason Currey looked into Jung’s life to understand his work habits at the Tower. Jung would wake up at seven in the morning. After a hearty breakfast, he would spend two hours writing without any distractions in his private office. His afternoons were often filled with meditation or long walks in the beautiful countryside around him. Since there was no electricity at the Tower, he used oil lamps for light and a fireplace for warmth as night fell. Jung would go to bed around ten p.m., saying, “The feeling of repose and renewal that I had in this tower was intense from the start.”

While it might seem like Bollingen Tower was just a vacation spot, it was actually much more important in Jung’s life. At that time, Jung couldn’t afford a real vacation. Just a year before, in 1921, he faced many challenges in his career. The Tower wasn’t a place to escape work; instead, it became a space for deep focus and creativity, helping him to grow as a thinker and a writer.
