The Education Department has recently introduced an annual calendar initiative called ‘Safe Saturday’ aimed at diverting children’s focus from traditional bookish knowledge. This innovative program features a diverse range of topics scheduled for each month, providing children with a wealth of information on various subjects. A key highlight of the ‘Safe Saturday’ calendar is its special emphasis on disaster management, offering crucial insights and guidance to children on how to handle emergencies effectively.
Every Saturday, a dedicated one-hour program is aired on Doordarshan Bihar as part of the ‘Safe Saturday’ initiative. This program serves as a valuable platform for educating children on disaster preparedness and response strategies, equipping them with essential skills to navigate challenging situations with confidence and resilience. As the season of storms, heavy rainfall, and thunderstorms unfolds, it becomes imperative for children to stay vigilant and informed about potential risks and safety measures.
Under the umbrella of the Chief Minister’s School Safety Programme, the focal teacher and district-level master trainer, Mohd. Faiyaz Ahmed, recently conducted a session as part of the ‘Safe Saturday’ program. During this session, children were sensitized to the various dangers posed by storms, including structural damage to houses, threats to life and property, fire hazards, and agricultural losses.
To ensure safety during such events, children were advised to seek shelter on the lower floors of buildings, refrain from venturing outdoors until the storm subsides, maintain a safe distance from trees and electrical poles, extinguish stoves, power off electrical appliances, keep mobile phones switched off, avoid standing under trees, and refrain from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
The session included a practical demonstration of a mock drill to educate children on how to protect themselves from lightning strikes. By simulating emergency scenarios and practicing safety protocols, children were empowered to respond effectively in real-life situations, fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience among young learners.
The ‘Safe Saturday’ initiative not only imparts valuable knowledge and skills to children but also instills a sense of responsibility and proactive mindset when it comes to ensuring their safety and well-being. By equipping children with the necessary information and practical guidance on disaster management, the program plays a crucial role in building a generation of informed and prepared individuals capable of facing challenges with confidence and composure.
Through engaging educational sessions, practical demonstrations, and expert guidance from seasoned trainers like Mohd. Faiyaz Ahmed, the ‘Safe Saturday’ program continues to make a positive impact on children’s awareness and readiness to tackle emergencies, contributing to a safer and more resilient community overall.
