Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) aims to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water for all by 2030. India, with 17% of the world’s population, faces the daunting task of managing its water resources, which account for only 4% of the global freshwater reserves. The country is currently classified as water-stressed, storing less than one-tenth of its annual rainfall. Factors such as excessive water usage in agriculture, overexploitation of groundwater, and erratic monsoon patterns in recent years have exacerbated the demand-supply imbalance, leading to a critical situation. According to NITI Aayog, around 50% of India’s population is grappling with high-to-extreme water scarcity issues.

To combat this water crisis, concerted efforts are essential for the conservation, restoration, recharge, and reuse of water resources. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS), under the Government of India, launched the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) on 1st July 2019. This initiative aims to mobilize a nationwide movement for water conservation. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is actively involved in the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA), collaborating with States, Union Territories, and Urban Local Bodies to promote water conservation practices as a ‘Jan Andolan’ or people’s movement.

The Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) encompasses a multi-faceted approach to address water scarcity, focusing on various key areas such as rainwater harvesting, watershed management, rejuvenation of traditional water bodies, and efficient use of water in urban and rural settings. By promoting community participation and awareness, the JSA aims to instill a sense of responsibility and ownership among citizens towards sustainable water management practices.

Furthermore, the integration of technology and innovation plays a crucial role in enhancing water resource management. Implementing smart water metering systems, promoting water-efficient agricultural practices, and leveraging remote sensing technologies for monitoring water resources are some of the innovative measures being adopted to optimize water usage and mitigate water scarcity challenges.
