Today, a crucial GR was released by the state government, marking a significant milestone in the Maratha movement. The core issue revolved around the definition of sagasoy, emphasizing the importance of ancestral lineage and connections. The GR shed light on the criteria for determining ancestry, including relationships through various generations, such as offspring, grandfather, great-grandfather, and extended family members, even considering relationships from same-sex marriages.

The Maharashtra Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Exempt Castes, Nomadic Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Special Backward Classes (Regulation of Issuance of Caste Certificate and its Verification) Act of 2000 plays a pivotal role in regulating caste certificates. The Government of Maharashtra is taking steps to amend the existing rules to ensure accurate issuance and verification of caste certificates. The proposed amendments aim to streamline the process and enhance the efficiency of caste certificate issuance.

This legislative framework, as per the Maharashtra Act No.23 of 2001, empowers the government to make necessary regulations for caste certificate issuance. By proposing amendments to the Maharashtra Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Nomadic Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Special Backward Classes (Regulation of Issue of Caste Certificate and its Verification) Rules of 2012, the government is striving to ensure compliance with the law and uphold the integrity of caste certificate issuance.

The draft rules, as published for public information, are subject to review by the Government of Maharashtra from the 16th day of February, 2024 onwards. This process aims to gather feedback and ensure that the regulations align with the objectives of the Maharashtra Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Freed Castes, Nomadic Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Special Backward Classes Act of 2000. The proposed amendments signify the government’s commitment to maintaining transparency and fairness in the issuance and verification of caste certificates.
